How do I correctly store Terrazzo before it is fitted?
Proper storage of terrazzo tiles helps maintain their quality and prevents damage before installation. Follow these guidelines to keep them in the best condition.
- Keep Tiles in a Dry Area
Store terrazzo tiles in a dry, covered space to prevent exposure to moisture. Excess humidity can affect the cement content and weaken the tiles. - Lay Flat on a Level Surface
Stack tiles on a stable, level surface to avoid warping or breakage. Do not lean them against walls, as this may cause stress fractures. - Use Protective Coverings
Keep the tiles covered with a breathable sheet or plastic wrap to protect them from dust and debris. Avoid airtight coverings that can trap moisture. - Avoid Direct Sunlight
Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can cause colour variations, especially in cement-based terrazzo. Store tiles in a shaded area to maintain their original tone. - Separate with Spacers
Place cardboard or wooden spacers between stacked tiles to prevent scratches and chips. This is especially important for polished surfaces. - Handle with Care
When moving tiles, carry them individually or in small stacks to reduce the risk of chipping. Always lift from the sides rather than the centre.
By following these steps, terrazzo tiles remain in excellent condition until installation. Proper storage ensures durability, colour consistency, and a flawless finish when installed.
